How to get rid of dandruff

Dandruff for Black hair

Struggling with dandruff? Constantly itching your scalp? Dandruff is caused by an extremely common skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis that often gets worse in the winter and with stress.

However, mild seborrheic dermatitis can be easily treated at home with anti-dandruff shampoos. We recommend:

  1. Washing your scalp with an anti-dandruff shampoo like Head & Shoulders, Selsun Blue, Neutrogena T-Sal, or Dove Dermacare Scalp.

  2. Leave the dandruff shampoo on your scalp for a few minutes before rinsing it out. You can even apply the shampoo before you get in the shower to make sure it stays on your scalp for long enough.

  3. If you can, wash your scalp regularly. Every day to every other day is optimal. But if your hair texture or hair style does not allow for regular washing, there are other options! Please make an appointment with one of our medical providers, and we can talk you through prescription dandruff treatments.

  4. Alternate between two different dandruff shampoos that have different active ingredients. For example, Selsun Blue uses selenium sulfide, but Neutrogena T-Sal uses salicylic acid, and tackling your dandruff with both can work even better.

Dandruff still out of control? Please schedule an appointment with one of our medical providers. All of our providers are extremely experienced in treating seborrheic dermatitis, and more severe dandruff and inflammation on the scalp requires prescription shampoos and topical medicines. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you are experiencing a flare in dandruff this winter.
