Melasma

Melasma is the name for symmetrical dark colored (brown or gray) patches located on the forehead, cheeks, between the lips and nose, bridge of nose, and chin. These dark patches are linked to frequent or prolonged sun exposure, pregnancy, or use of birth control pills. This is a common condition that typically affects women between the ages of 20-50 years, though it can also affect men. The Bellevue dermatologists at Dermatology Arts are well trained to recognize this condition in patients and recommend treatments to help lighten the skin in the affected area and resolve this problem.

Melasma occurs when pigment producing cells called melanocytes, become stimulated by hormones or other factors. Once stimulated the melanocytes produce even more melanin when exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation which results in dark patches on the skin that tend to get darker with more sun exposure.

There are a few different treatment options for melasma and the dermatologists at Dermatology Arts will discuss the appropriate plan for treatment of your skin condition. With the proper treatment, your symptoms should slowly diminish and may go away completely. The dermatology providers will also discuss ways to prevent future flare ups of melasma.
