What causes acne?
Acne affects at least 80 percent of the population and is considered the most common skin disease in the world. While acne typically affects teenagers, younger children and adults can also experience acne breakouts. Blackheads and whiteheads are formed when the pores of your skin become clogged with sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. Over time a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes bacteria becomes trapped in these clogged pores triggering inflammation resulting in the formation of a pustule or cystic lesion on the skin. Acne most frequently affects the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. Did you know that one-third of adult women over 45 years of age still have a form of hormonal acne?
How can I get rid of acne and acne scarring?
At Dermatology Arts, we use topical retinoids and antibiotics along with modestly priced over-the-counter products to help you achieve clear skin without breaking the bank. When necessary, we use isotretinoin (Accutane), and occasionally branded products.
Even if you’ve used some of these treatments before, we recommend special ways to use these acne treatments which will give you better results.
