Shedding Hair after COVID?
Are you noticing clumps of hair in the drain after you shower? Have you noticed that your hair looks thinner than before?
It is common to go through a period of hair shedding after a stressful event. This type of hair shedding is called Telogen Effluvium, and the stressful event could be physical stressor like going through an illness or an emotional stressor like moving to a new country or starting a new job. Having COVID is definitely a stressor, and many people have experienced significant hair shedding afterwards. Luckily, telogen effluvium is temporary. It generally lasts 6-8 months, and afterwards your hair will return back to normal. Check out this NYTimes article to learn more!
However, if you have noticed that your hair is shedding, it is still a good idea to come see a medical provider, so we can evaluate the hair loss and order any necessary tests. Sometimes, hair loss can be caused by other factors like male or female pattern hair loss, and sometimes, telogen effluvium is caused by thyroid problems or iron deficiencies that need to be treated.
