Prevent Eczema Flares This Winter

Amongst many other dry skin conditions, eczema tends to flare up in the colder and dryer winter months. At Dermatology Arts, we see many patients for eczema, and as we head into the winter, we would like to share some of our top tips for self-care!

  1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! If you have eczema, your skin barrier breaks down more easily, and it is critical to moisturize multiple times a day. We recommend CeraVe Moisturizing Cream because it has ceramides which help rebuild the skin barrier.

  2. Use unscented, sensitive skin soaps. Soaps, especially harsh, scented soaps can further dry out your skin. Only use soap where you need it, and use a gentle soap. We recommend Dove Bar Soap.

  3. Wear gloves when you do the dishes! Dish soap is often extremely harsh and drying. Protect your hands from dish soap by wearing rubber gloves with a cotton lining.

  4. Shower with warm water instead of hot water. Hot water dries out your skin. Save your skin by showering and bathing in lukewarm water.

However, if you’re not sure if you have eczema or if your eczema is not well controlled, please make an appointment! Our practitioners have a wealth of experience in treating eczema, and we can guide you through a number of treatment including topical steroids, non-steroidal topical treatments, oral medications, and biologics.
