Patch testing is a type of skin allergy testing where small amounts of different substances (eg: metals, fragrance, and chemicals found in common over the counter products) are placed on the skin under an adhesive tape. Since contact allergies can take a few days to develop, allergy patch testing requires three appointments spread across the week. Typically, the patches are applied to to skin on Monday, removed on Wednesday, and then the results are read on Friday. During this time the patient is requested to not shower or sweat heavily or exercise in order to keep the adhesive tape and patches in place. If you are interested in doing allergy patch testing, please schedule an appointment with Liz Schuringa, ARNP.
